ARTURO TOSI 1871-1956 Paesaggio a Rovetta Oil on canvas, signed lower right recto. 19.68 x 23.62 in. Following the model of Paul Cézanne Arturo Tosi took refuge in Rovetta, in Val Seriana, starting in 1905 to elaborate his personal investigation into the profound meaning of nature. The feeling that pervades him in the depiction of this landscape so dear to him is described by his own words in a 1928 interview: "I have been spending the summer in Rovetta for several years, a beautiful site: a window from my studio looks at the fields, and when I go out I don't meet anyone. [...] I believe that you cannot paint a landscape if you do not know it like this: by dint of looking at it, and in the most different moments, you are suddenly made to grasp its profound meaning, that perhaps at other times you had missed it; and then you say: here we are. [...] Between your feeling and that of things there is an immediate, intimate, indisputable correspondence "(Aligi, Visits to artists. Arturo Tosi in" La Fiera Letteraria ", No. 236, March 1928). It was precisely with the 1920 Venice Biennale that Tosi, who had already had the opportunity to appreciate the work of the French master in Paris, fully discovered his art and was struck and inspired by it. His visions of nature, if before they were still permeated by a nineteenth-century sentimental elaboration and by impressionist colors, become as he repeats several times 'alcoholic' himself, for the impetus with which he spreads the swirling color mixtures on the canvas which is joined by the achievement of a poetic that is increasingly in line with the Italian art groups of the first post-war period, including Novecento, of which the board will become part of since 1925. Landscape in Rovetta coming from a private Milanese collection, it is a significant example in the Tosian work of an "architectural" structuring of the natural space: in the lower part the land is crossed by lines that seem to support the next field of the plateau and of the mountain that closes the landscape with great plasticity. Above opens, in a space, a sky painted in tenuous colors that flood the whole nature with homogeneity. Provenienza/Provenance Galleria Gian Ferrari, Milano. Collezione Privata, Milano.
