Si sono giunti i tre libri della pittura, & il trattato della statua di Leon Battista Alberti con la vita del medesimo. “In Parigi[=Paris], Appresso Giacomo Langlois [..]”, 1651. 2 Parts in 1 vol.: [18(of 20)],112,[2],[11 index],[3 blank]; [14(of 16)],62,[2 blank] pp. With engraved title-vignette by R. Lochon & num. engraved text-illustrations (incl. diagrams, head- & tail-pieces and capital letters) by i.a. R. Lochon. Small folio (ca. 37 x 25,5 cm.), 18th-cent. gilt brown morocco, both covers with central gilt coat-of-arms (of John Stuart 3rd Earl of Bute) & gilt border around sides, gilt spine with red mor. letterpiece. – Added: an anonymous 20th-cent. Spanish translation of both treatises (“Tratado de la Pintura – Leonardo da Vinci”/ “Tratado de la Pintura – Leon Battista Alberti”, 2 parts in 1 vol.). ¶ Ad 1: Brunet V, 1257. Graesse VI, p. 327. Cicognara 232 (“Prima e magnifica edizione”). Rare first edition (printed with wide margins) of the famous treatise on painting by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) edited by the French art historian Raphael Trichet du Fresne (1611-1661) together with 2 treatises (on painting & sculpture) by the Italian humanist Leon Battista Alberti (1404-1472) translated from the Latin by the Italian humanist Cosimo Bartoli (1503-1572). The illustrations, engraved by i.a. the French print-maker René Lochon (1636-1675), were also used for the French translation (by the French theorist of architecture Roland Fréart de Chambray (1606-1676), published in 1651 in Paris by Jacques Langlois and are partly attributed to the French artist Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665). Our copy bound in an armorial binding with the coat-of-arms of the Scottish-born Prime Minister of Great Britain & noted bibliophile JOHN STUART 3rd EARL OF BUTE (1713-1792) incorporating his motto “Nobilis [est] Ira [Leonis]/ Avito Viret Honore” (The lion’s anger is noble/ He flourishes by ancestral honors). ¶ Lacks the engraved portrait of Leonardo da Vinci (in part 1) & the engraved portrait of L.B. Alberti (in part 2). Three text-leaves in part 1 (Hij-Hiij & Oi) with erratic pagination, but text is complete. With defects (binding partly rubbed/ worn, upper joint sl. dam./ splitting, owner’s entry in black ink on title, title-leaf & 1 preliminary text-leaf partly strengthened with paper in outer blank margins, partly waterstained (throughout) in outer blank margins, occ. sl. foxed/ browned), but nevertheless in an acceptable condition.
