A collection of approximately 60 autograph letters signed, 1875-1904, most by members or associates of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, together approximately 108 pages, mostly 8vo ; the letters including: William Holman HUNT to Sir Edwin Arnold, showing satisfaction at the imprisonment of Oscar Wilde, 'the sentence pronounced by the Judge on Saturday against the creature of affectation and wickedness who has been so offensive and injurious in recent years to both good and morals'; Ford Maddox BROWN, to Henry Buxton Forman (2 letters and one postcard) and one letter to [Alfred?] Stephens, on matters relating to the committee for a memorial to Rossetti, 'Respecting the male element that has rejected us none need I think trouble us much except Tennyson - but Millais more than compensates for him ... Please if not too late do not write to Ruskin ... Should he consent I should be on my beam-ends, utterly unprepared how to act' and referring to some bronzes from Paris (1885-1886); Edward Onslow Ford (2), to Professor [Edwin Ray] Lankester and Mr Fagan, referring to his statue of Thomas Huxley, and recommending 'Hudson's extract of soap' to wash marble; Alfred Waterhouse (2), one recommending Thomas Brock to sculpt the memorial of [Sir Philip Cunliffe] Owen (Director of the South Kensington Museum); Frederick Leighton (2 and one letter signed) recommending Brock 'for an iconic statue Brock is the better man'; other signatories including Laurence Alma Tadema, John Gilbert Alfred Gilbert Edward Tennyson Reed Edward Poynter, Thomas Brock (2); William Bell Scott (poet, critic and friend of William Morris and Dante Gabriel Rossetti , 19 letters to the poet William Cosmo Monkhouse and one to Mrs Heaton, on literary matters and mentioning Morris, Christina Rossetti and William De Morgan ('a long thin creature made I think of dried herring bones'; Alice Boyd (Scott's mistress); R.E. Francillon (5 ) to Monkhouse; together with letters by actors and singers including Herbert Beerbohm Tree, William Macready, Henry Irving (3 letters signed), Adelina Patti (2) and six others. (60)
