More info: Click to read more about this lot Sean Scully abandoned figurative work in the mid-1960s and has since established a reputation as an abstract painter. Drawing on the traditions of Abstract Expressionism, he creates strongly articulated pieces: canvases on heavy stretchers, and architectural constructions that project themselves into the viewer’s space. Scully had his first major exhibition at the Rowan Gallery in 1973 and today his work is represented in the permanent collections of most major museums and public galleries around the world. The Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin, opened an extension in 2006 with a room dedicated to Scully's works. His works were the subject of a hugely successful exhibition "Sean Scully at the National Gallery of Ireland" to mark the artist’s 70th birthday. The subject work ”Diagonals 1” from 1973 is a particularly important work as it was the first and one of finest works in the series exhibited in the Rowan Gallery during this pivotal time in the Artist’s development.
