Artist: G. MOORE Size: 39 7/8 x 59 3/8 in./101.3 x 151 cm Condition: A-/ Slight tears at folds. Printer: The Dangerfield Printing Co., London Reference: Key Words: Bicycles; By Air, Land, or Sea; Art Nouveau The Rover. ca. 1890. Oh, the places you can go with a Rover bicycle: to the idyllic countryside for a relaxing fish in the pond, or perhaps a leisurely ride adjacent to a handsome gentleman who shares a fondness for cycling. The Rover, produced by John Kemp Starley of Coventry, England, in 1884, was the first pedal-powered vehicle to replace the velocipede with a much safer bike with two equal-sized wheels. Since this innovation made it possible for anyone with a decent sense of equilibrium to hop aboard, it gave an enormous impetus to the bicycle craze, which was thereby launched in earnest. But ladies, mind those hemlines: our lass is tempting an accident with her inappropriate bicycle-wear. Though nothing is known about Moore apart from the fact that he designed several brilliant bicycle advertisements (see PAI-XL, 43 & 44, and PAI-XLI, 23), the style he created in those few known posters is precise, detailed, and direct.
