Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 39 3/8 x 57 1/2 in./100 x 146 cm Condition: B+/ Slight tears at folds. Printer: Tom Browne, Nottingham Reference: Key Words: Bicycles; By Air, Land, or Sea Raleigh. ca. 1910. In the late 19th century, most bicycles were built of clunky materials: plain bearings required constant oiling, and wood frames were less ergonomically sensible. And then came Raleigh: in 1901, they introduced the first "all-steel" bicycle, made of lightweight thin steel tubes, and lugs and brackets stamped from sheet steel. In this pre-World War I advertisement, "The British Masterpiece" is compared to the large steel warships in the background. Our young soldier pauses from his seaside ride to allow a veteran and his wife to admire his slick and graceful steed. This is a two-sheet poster.
