Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 31 3/4 x 46 1/8 in./80.6 x 117 cm Condition: B+/ Slight tears at folds. Printer: Imp. Affichage Ador, Paris Reference: Key Words: Circus; Art Nouveau Nouveau Cirque / Le Carnaval de Venise. ca. 1890. The spirit of Venice's Carnaval is suffused throughout this delightful poster for the Nouveau Cirque. The circus, which opened in 1886 on the Rue St-Honoré, was an upscale establishment: formal attire was required, but in exchange, patrons enjoyed one of the few buildings in Paris at the time to be completely lit by electric lights. The entire arena could be lowered by hydraulics to create a water basin, which is surely how they managed to present this absurd affair on Venice's canals. In the center, mandolin players, mimes, and masked maidens congregate upon an overstuffed gondola, singing barcarolles, while two ruffians fight each other upon a sinking craft. Two of France's most famous clowns, Footit and Chocolate, regularly performed there.
