Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 28 1/4 x 20 1/2 in./71.8 x 52 cm Condition: A-/ Slight tears at edges. Printer: Strobridge, Cincinnati Reference: Ref: Phillips VIII, 143; Strobridge, p. 75 (var) Key Words: Circus; Animals Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey / Miss Mabel Stark. 1924. At a time when men dominated circus performances, Mable Stark epitomized the powerful and independent New Woman. Widely regarded as the most celebrated tiger trainer in the United States, Stark developed her own non-aggressive methods for training tigers, which employed verbal commands and the use of a wooden pole. Beginning in 1911 and until her death, she spent 57 years in the field, and by the time of this poster was in her prime. One of her greatest feats was orchestrating 16 tigers into a pyramid, with the last tiger jumping over her head before rising to the peak. This "intrepid lady trainer" stands as a true testament to women's impact on the circus.
