Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 21 1/4 x 30 5/8 in./54 x 78 cm Condition: B+/ Slight tears, largely at edges. Printer: Reference: Key Words: Circus; Animals; Art Nouveau Van Amburgh's / Collection of Trained Animals. ca. 1845. Isaac Van Amburgh, otherwise known as The Lion King, was a famous animal trainer who was best known for his fearless interactions with lions, tigers, and leopards—namely, inserting his arm and head into a lion's mouth, as illustrated in the second panel here. His career began as a cage cleaner at the Zoological Institute of New York, and upon discovering his unique capability of mastering wild felines, he incorporated his own traveling show. He made his New York debut at the Bowery Theatre in 1834, and won the support of Queen Victoria when he traveled to London in 1838, resulting in a seven-year stint abroad. This enchanting poster depicts some of the exotic animals he collected, and the sensational acts he performed.
