Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 16 5/8 x 22 1/2 in./42.2 x 57 cm Condition: B/ Slight tears at edges. Printer: Imp. Ch. Lévy, Paris Reference: Ref: PAI-XXXVIII, 115 (var) Key Words: Circus; Art Nouveau Arsens Blondin. ca. 1860. Arsens Blondin, stage name of French funambuliste Jean François Gravelet, was performing at Niblo’s Garden in New York City when he got the brilliant idea to walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope. After a month’s preparation, the event took place on July 1, 1859—on a three-inch rope, with at least 12,000 spectators watching. Circus historian Felix Sutton relates that, “During the next few days, the fearless Frenchman made several more crossings... [and] on his final trip... he made the return—on stilts!” (A History of the Circus, p. 132-134). This poster documents Blondin's later feat in his native Paris: crossing the River Seine in a variety of renditions, such as with a bag over his head. But that's not all: the bill also promises bicycle and pony races, flying pigs, and hot air balloon rides.
