Engraved title-page, engraved portrait frontispiece, 7 engraved maps (5 folding, 2 double-page), and 46 engraved plates, of which 31 ZOOLOGICAL PLATES WITH CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOURING. (L4 and M1 lightly creased, paper flaw to P4 with small marginal loss, light spotting affecting Z2-4.) Contemporary calf backed marble-paper covered boards, vellum tips, red morocco gilt lettering piece to spine (extremities lightly rubbed, more heavily to head- and tailcaps). FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST OFFICIAL ACCOUNT TO DESCRIBE THE VOYAGE TO BOTANY BAY AND THE FOUNDATION OF MODERN AUSTRALIA. Reaching Botany Bay in 1788, Phillip declared it unsuitable and went on to Port Jackson, there founding the city named for Thomas Townsend, Viscount Sydney. Phillip embarked on a long voyage of coastal discovery culminating in a full survey of Sydney Harbour, 'one of the finest in the world, in which a thousand sail of the line might ride in perfect security.'
