Julius Ballinus is mentioned in a 1576 letter by Aldus Manutius the Younger to Johann Craton (cf. Schück, Aldus Manutius und seine Zeitgenossen , p.165); he also owned a copy of Didymus’ Scholia on Homer [Rome: 1517] now at Balliol College. Artemidorus' work on the interpretation of dreams is the most important ancient work on this subject. His sources included the writings of previous authors, especially Democritus and Aristotle, as well as his own collection of dreams. The Christian Neoplatonist Synesius was also interested in the occult and in divination by dreams. Both texts are also important for the study of ancient folklore. The manuscript exemplar survives at Venice as Marc. gr. 268. Isaac 12883; Adams A-2035; Hoffmann I, 382 and III, 465; Ahmanson-Murphy 148; Renouard Alde 82:4.
