Binding : Contemporary Westphalian blind-tooled calf over bevelled-edge wooden boards, one clasp, preserving fragments of a 15th-century notarial document under the pastedowns, later vellum spine labels (torn at foot of spine, small portion of headcap missing, without the clasp but retaining the brass catchplate, back pastedown partly removed). The binding tools are not identified in any of the standard repertories. Provenance : contemporary MS title on bevelled edge of upper cover; Wynandus Wynen (original ownership inscription on flyleaf); P. Wiesert, 1815 (inscription on third flyleaf); "10,149" (19th-century printed paper label on spine). FIRST EDITION of the Secretum secretorum . This pseudo-Aristotelian treatise, a collection of practical maxims, occult lore and folk wisdom on a variety of subjects, including dietetics and physiognomy, was supposedly written by Aristotle for his pupil Alexander the Great. Though based on Greek sources, the work is probably Arabic or Syriac in origin and appears to date from the 7th-9th centuries. Found at Antioch and translated from the Arabic by Philip of Tripoli, of whom little is known, it became immensely popular in the Latin West, where it survives in more than 600 manuscripts. This edition presents a short version of the text, one that is found primarily in Flemish manuscripts (F. Wurms, Studien zu den deutschen und den lateinischen Prosafassungen des pseudo-aristotelischen "Secretum secretorum" , Hamburg 1970, pp.101-4; C.B. Schmitt and D. Knox, Pseudo-Aristoteles Latinus , London 1985, pp.54-75). Second edition of Nider's Consolatorium timoratae conscientiae , one of a number of popular tractates for preachers and confessors compiled by Johann Nider, a Dominican who participated in the Councils of Constance and Basel and reformed the convents of his order in Nuremberg, Basel and elsewhere. The Augustinus De fide press produced 11 quarto and 2 folio editions, two of which are signed from Cologne and several of which are datable to 1473-74. The anonymous printer is now considered to be Johann Schilling. NO COPY IN AMERICA.
