Beschreibung:

Aristotle, De Physica, in Latin translation, leaf from a decorated manuscript on parchment [France, thirteenth century] Single leaf, with single column of 25 lines in small and angular university script (written space 136 by 70mm.), with numerous abbreviations and lateral compression, paragraph marks and running titles in red or blue, extensive interlinear additions with alternative readings, and with large blocks of commentary in margins in near-contemporary hand, some cockling, small spots and a few holes, overall good and presentable, 268 by 198mm. From the Fall of the Roman Empire, knowledge of most of Aristotle’s works was lost in the West until the mid-twelfth century. The following decades saw the rapid translation of his key surviving works into Latin. The De Physica is an extended series of lectures on animate and inanimate things, and is one of the foundational works of Western science and philosophy. The present leaf is from a high quality university copy of the text, and contains parts of book VI.
