(Minor marginal worming, repaired in places, a few tiny rust holes, some light marginal staining.) Contemporary calf gilt, covers with border of gilt double fillet, central gilt monograms of Fabri de Peirisc, spine in six compartments, titled and dated in second, the others decorated with a small floral tool (rebacked preserving original spine, some wear or repairs to corners and edges). Provenance : Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc (1580-1637), antiquary, philologist and naturalist (Greek monogram on covers and ink stamp on first text leaf). FIRST EDITION OF THIS HISTORY OF SPAIN'S FIGHT FOR CONTROL OF THE MOLUCCAS. Regarded by Hill as an "essential work for the history of Spanish and Portuguese exploration in the East Indies," Argensolas's narrative is noted for its breadth of knowledge and over-all grasp of world politics. "In his digressions on people and places," writes Lach ( Asia in the making of Europe, III, pp. 311-12), "Argensola adds significantly to the stockpile of information on Asia, especially on the Moluccas, Java, Sumatra, and Ceylon. His book also ties together neatly the affairs of Europe with struggles in the overseas areas, for he sees the spice trade in its world wide ramifications and makes his reader acutely aware of its immediate and potential interest for Japan and China." A FINE COPY FROM THE LIBRARY OF NICOLAS-CLAUDE FABRI DE PEIRESC, an antiquary, philologist and naturalist of Aix-en-Provence, who amassed one of the largest private libraries of his time, of which a manuscript catalogue survives in Carpentras. Many of the books were bound by his house binder Simon Corberan, who was apparently the first to include dates in the spine lettering of his patron's books. The library was dispersed after Peiresc's death, and since then his provenance has become synonymous with bibliophile condition. The present volume bears his greek monogram (composed of two sets of his initials '\KN K F\k') on the sides and first page. J.-M.
