This bio-bibliography of Milanese authors consists of c. 10,000 titles and is "a model regional bibliography which has remained useful to the present day. It completely superseded its inadequate predecessor, Filippo Picinelli's 'Ateneo dei Litterati Milanesi' (Milan, 1670)" (Breslauer & Folter). The extensive bibliography of Milanese incunabula by Sassi, prefect of the Ambrosiana, is modelled on Maittaire's "Annales" and is chronologically arranged. Argelati, antiquary and bibliographer, was also manager and part owner of the Società Palatina, a non-commercial printing press in Milan.
