Paris: Adrien Turnbe, 1554. 8 o (145 x 95 mm). Collation: * 2; A-M 8 N 4. 102 leaves. Greek and roman types. Woodcut ornamental initials, initial spaces with printed guide letters. (Occasional light foxing, most leaves reinforced in gutter.) Brown morocco antique, gilt-lettered spine (original endpapers bound in). Provenance : Cosmo Gordon, 1905 (signature, date and ?shelfmark on slip of paper mounted to front pastedown); College of Surgeons (ink stamp, title page); London, Royal College of Medicine (emblematic bookplate signed "Alf. J. Downey Del. et Sculpt. London 1924", deaccessioned 1961). EDITIO PRINCEPS of Aretaeus' work on the causes, symptoms and cures of acute and chronic diseases. The Pneumatic school of medicine, from which Aretaeus' treatises are the only works that survive intact, revived the doctrine of Hippocrates and reintroduced the use of the Ionic dialect into medical literature. Aretaeus also employed Homeric words and expressions, and is a significant witness to Greek prose style during the first century A.D.
