One engraved folding plate of hawking instruments and implements and 14 full-page engraved illustrations of falcons and their skeletons within type-ornament borders. Woodcut headpieces and initials. Letterpress table in the text. (Some light browning, a few light marks, some leaves trimmed touching headline, unobtrusive worming, title trimmed with slight loss, paper flaw in C2, folding plate with clean tears.) [?]17th-century binding of a 12th-century manuscript vellum leaf from a giant bible bearing partial text of the Gospel of St Mark X, 19-XI, 2 over pasteboard (a little marked, worming on pastedowns, splitting on hinges and lower joint). Provenance : [?]R. Cünnighein (inscription on title) -- occasional annotations or underlinings in an early hand. FIRST AND ONLY GERMAN EDITION OF THIS 'CLASSIC BOOK ON HAWKING' (Schwerdt, p. 41). Charles d'Arcussia, Premier consul d'Aix (1596-1597) and Député du pays aux États de Provence (1597), was well known for his skill in hawking, and his celebrated treatise La Fauconnerie was first published in Paris in 1598: 'the work is much esteemed on account of its originality and the amount of information which it conveys, and particularly for the description which the author gives of flights which he witnessed when hawking with the king' (Harting, p. 82). The text of this German edition is divided into five parts, which indicates that it was based on either the fourth or fifth French editions (published in Paris in 1607 and 1608), and the engravings are from the French editions, but enclosed within type-ornament borders. Although some bibliographies mention other early German editions, none of these can be traced, and they appear to be ghosts; as Lindner states, 'Andere deutsche Ausgaben als die hier genannte [i.e. the present edition] ... existieren nicht' (11.0077.02). Souhart notes that, 'Cette traduction allemande est fort rare', and this edition is scarce at auction. Harting 97; Lindner 11.0077.01; Nissen IVB 36; Schwerdt I, p. 43; Souhart 22-23.
