Title: Archive of original photographs of the Hemingway family Author: Place: Publisher: Date: 1900-1950 Description: Collection of 35 mostly gelatin silver photographs of various members of the family of Ernest Hemingway. The photographs range from 8x10” studio portraits down to 3x4½” snapshot prints. Most are identified on the reverse in the hand of Hemingway family members. Included are the following: 7½x9½” vintage photo of the Hemingway family showing Clarence, Grace Hall and four children, Marceline, Ernest, Ursala, and Madeline, (all born at that time). A wonderful sharp, possibly platinum print formal portrait, showing Ernest with page boy haircut and neck tie, and others in dressy contemporary attire. One tiny abrasion on surface and a tiny torn corner. Formal portrait of the bearded Clarence Edmond Hemingway with pencil note, “For Ursala, this picture of Daddy was taken in 1920 probably. I had it copied Nov 1951”. Another portrait of Clarence, a vintage formal Hoffman Studio, Chicago image; elegant formal portrait of sister Sunny Hemingway playing the harp. 8x10 portrait of Madeline (Sunny), plus another image. Two of Ursala, one in 20’s fur coat, hat and other perhaps college age. Sister Marceline with daughter Carol. A small early Oak Park studio CDV of Ursala inscribed “for Dear Grandma, Ursala at 5 mos”, another at one year old. Portrait photo of Alfred Tyler Hemingway, Ernest’s Kansas city uncle, an important person in his life, inscribed to mother Grace in Oak Park. Photo of (cousins?) Winifred and Isabel Hemingway. Snap shot of 4 generations of Hemingways. Two nice snap shots of the wedding couple, Ernest and Hadley, with and without the family, Sept. 3, 1921, (different images than what appear in the Baker biography). Formal café photo (Moreys?) of Ernest, sister Ursala and husband with three unidentified friends at a bar from the 40’s. 8x10’s of Ernest, sister Sunny and son dated 1947. Ernest having just shot a Bighorn Sheep (2 copies). 2 original 8x10’s of 5 year old Ernest fishing in 1904 (reproduced p. 78 in Baker biography) with original negative Five 8 x 10’s of Ernest visiting sister Ursala Hemingway Jepson in Honolulu, sitting with friends having cocktails and swimming in Kahala, a time in Ernest’s life when he spent pleasurable time with Ursala who had lived all her adult life in Hawaii and they supposedly reconnected after a long absence. Snap shots of the Key West house and EH’s tower study. Ernest as a boy in canoe at Walloon Lake, brother Les Hemingway shooting as a boy. A nice snap shot of Ernest inscribed holding “John Hadley Nicanor age 3 mos, 10 days, Dec. 1925”, a strong image. Also included a mailed postcard, Walloon Lake from Ursala, Ernest and Marcelline to their mother Grace vacationing on Nantucket. “Daddy just got home from the farm with some ice, etc.” An exceptional group of photographs that descended through the family of Ursala Hemingway Jepson in Honolulu, and have only been removed from a box into mylar binder pages for protection at auction.
