Title: Archive of material relating to scientist William B. Shockley, including bibliographic material, his sailboat and his cat Author: Shockley, William Bradford Place: California Publisher: Date: c.1945-1980 Description: Includes: Notebook kept by William Shockley beginning in 1945, with various ideas, listings of books and reports read, etc. Notebook kept by Shockley beginning in 1962 (marked Logbook on front cover), detailing for the most part work done on his sailboat "Sly Sharpie," the boat's performance, records of trips, etc. Two large photographs (14x11") and three smaller ones (8x10") of the boat at dock and sailing. About 25 later photographs, late 1970's, of Shockley and his family. * Various mimeographed or printed items relating to the Palo Alto Yacht Club, race handicaps, etc... 49 photographs of Shockley's cats, in plastic sleeves in an album. Interesting little archive relating to the scientist who, despite his solid contributions to electronics that helped lay the groundwork for today's Silicon Valley, is best remembered for his advocacy of eugenics. His theories on the genetic superiority of whites over black, and advocacy of voluntary sterilization for those with IQs below 100, will forever cloud his legacy. Lot Amendments Condition: Generally very good condition. Item number: 193744
