ARCHIVE OF LETTERS TO BROADWAY GOSSIP COLUMNIST RADIE HARRIS.] Radie Harris [1905-2001] wrote the "Broadway Ballyhoo" column for the Hollywood Reporter for nearly fifty years, and was a mainstay on CBS radio during the 1940s and 1950s, often broadcasting from Sardi's in New York and the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood. Harris was close to many of the stars whose careers she covered on Broadway and in film, including Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, Tyrone Power, and Gertrude Lawrence, among others. This lot features a large archive of correspondence from the 1940s to the 1980s to Harris, along with a fine collection of photographs inscribed to Harris by various celebrities. Highlights include the following: 1.LEIGH, VIVIEN. 2 Autograph Letters Signed ("Vivien"), 6 pp, 4to and 8vo, Perth, Australia and Tobago, [1948], to Radie Harris, the earlier letter thanking her for sending reviews of recent film and sending condolences after the death of a Harris relative, light creasing, otherwise fine. 2.OLIVIER, LAURENCE. 3 Autograph Letters Signed ("Larry"), 5 pp recto and verso, 8vo, New York, August 22, 1979 and n.d., to Radie Harris, regarding gifts and visits; together with 6 Typed Letters Signed ("Larry," "Larry O.," and "L"), 6 pp, 8vo, London and Sussex, September 11, 1957 to January 4, 1974, to Radie Harris, discussing recent projects and sending thanks. 3.MERIVALE, JOHN. Autograph Letter Signed ("Jack"), 2 pp, 12mo, London, July 20, 1967, to Radie Harris, writing just after the sudden death from tuberculosis of Vivien Leigh. Merivale was Leigh's companion during the final years of her life, and he writes this note to Leigh's good friend Harris: "Try to derive the comfort there is in that the fact that she had no premonition of [death]. She, who so bravely bore so many adversities and trials, at least didn't have to face that Thank God for her. We were wonderfully lucky who knew her and her love. It was worth a thousand times the misery of the present-if that's calculable." The Harris archive also features correspondence from BRIAN AHERN, EDDIE ALBERT, ANN-MARGRET, HAROLD ARLEN, FRED ASTAIRE, CAROL CHANNING, KIRK DOUGLAS, GREER GARSON, REX HARRISON, OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND, HELEN HAYES, JERRY HERMAN, JOHNNY GREEN, HILDEGARD, DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS, JR., EVA GABOR, DEBORAH KERR, ANGELA LANDSBURY, LUNT & FONTANNE, RAYMOND MASSEY, JAYNE MEADOWS, JOHN MILLS, MERLE OBERON, GREGORY PECK, MICHAEL REDGRAVE, ROSALIND RUSSELL, DORE SCHARY, BEVERLY SILLS, JULES STEIN, EMLYN WILLIAMS, KITTY CARLISLE HART, and GERTRUDE LAWRENCE, among others. Present also are signed and inscribed photographs of TYRONE POWER, FRED ASTAIRE, LAURENCE OLIVIER, CHARLES BOYER, OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND, JOSE FERRER, RICHARD CHAMBERLAIN, CAROLD CHANNING, and NOEL COWARD.
