ARCHIVE OF GARBO LETTERS TO HEALTH GURU GAYELORD HAUSER. 8 Autograph Letters, a few signed integrally ("Harriet Gila Brown," "Muschkkla," "Brown"), in pencil, 26 pp, most leaves 4to, Beverly Hills, CA, [1939], to Dr. Gayelord Hauser, with 3 holograph transmittal envelopes, some smudging to text, a few leaves with some loss. Together with 44 black and white snapshots of Garbo and Hauser vacationing, most 5 by 7 inches, many with glue residue to verso. Garbo's friend and former paramour Mercedes D'Acosta introduced her to wellness guru Gayelord Hauser in late 1938. Hauser already had quite a following; his clients included Adele Astaire's husband Lord Cavendish, Clara Bow the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Barbara Hutton, Gloria Swanson, and others. Garbo, however, was at this time the most famous actress in the world, and Hauser was eager to pursue a professional and personal relationship with the reclusive Swede. Hauser converted Garbo to his health regimen, proscribing a diet of juices, wild rice, celery, carrots, blackstrap molasses, citrus, an early version of the "veggie burger," and vitamin supplements. In Garbo: Her Story, an autobiography co-written in the 1970s with Antoni Gronowicz but not published until after her death, Garbo recalls her relationship with Hauser with contempt, accusing him of using their relationship to promote his own interests, and ridiculing him for copying her habit of wearing berets. Nonetheless, Garbo and Hauser were quite close during 1939, as this correspondence reveals. In part: "Lord what a labor of love this writing is. I have such difficulty in spelling. You see I never write and when I read I don't observe the spelling. Or maybe I am just a problem child who does not like school work. Any way it must be love however you look at it Darling, I just have to write a few lines on account of my little heart is very full. I had such nice day. I watch your plane going and coming back and a couple of tears started to well up in my eyes but I pushed them back and they stayed back." Garbo also discusses more prosaic topics, including construction on her house and shopping for antiques, and also characteristically refers to herself as "a good boy." Hauser and Garbo's friendship waned after a Caribbean cruise together in early 1940, during which, according to Garbo, Hauser continually pleaded with the actress to marry him. She refused, and was appalled to discover when they docked that Hauser had leaked a story about their supposed marriage to the press.
