Title: Archive of 11 photographs, three are inscribed by the Hon. Walter B. Beals, the presiding judge during the American military tribunal for war crimes committed during World War II Author: Beals, Walter Burges Place: Publisher: Date: 1935-1947 Description: With 11 total gelatin silver-print photographs, 2 are loose, the rest are mounted on paper backing. Photos of various people and judges, mostly of Beals and/or those either associated with him or with the Tribunal. One loose photo showing four justices, inscribed and signed by Beals as Presiding Judge, Military Tribunal I, Nuremberg, Germany, 1946-1947. Another photo inscribed and signed by Beals, dated December 1935. Various sizes from 3¼x3½" to 8x10". Judge Walter B. Beals (State Supreme Court Chief Justice of Washington) served as the Presiding Judge over the American military tribunal criminal proceedings against twenty-three leading German physicians and administrators after World War II. The defendants were accused of organizing and participating in war crimes and crimes aginst humanity in the form of harmful or fatal medical experiments and other medical procedures inflicted on both civilians and prisoners of war. Titled "The Doctors' Trial," it lasted nine months and on August 20, 1947, sixteen of the defendants were found guilty. Other members of the tribunal included Judge Harold L. Sebring, Judge Johnson T. Crawford, and Judge Victor C. Swearingen. Lot Amendments Condition: A few photos with some fading, paper backing somewhat worn, other occasional light wear; else very good or better. Item number: 160714
