ARBIT BLATAS Lithuanian, 1908-1999 Three Penny Opera Screen Oil on canvas laid to panel Overall 86 3/4 x 54 7/8 inches (220.3 x 139.4 cm); each panel 86 3/4 x 18 1/4 inches (220.3 x 46.4 cm) Provenance: The Estate of the Artist, 1999 The Estate of Regina Resnik Blatas, 2013 Thence by descent in the family to the present owner Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's masterwork, The Threepenny Opera debuted at the Theatre De Lys on Christopher Street (now the Lucille Lortel Theatre) in 1954. Marc Blitzstein's adaptation was critically acclaimed as an off-Broadway show and the production ran for over 2500 performances. In this work by Blatas one can see the following characters from left to right: Jenny, The Madame, Mack the Knife, Streetsinger, Mr. Peachum, Filch, and Mrs. Peachum. The lower panels depict members of the orchestra. C
There is a two inch crack to panel at the top of one of the panels near a hinge, which is loose and may need repair (upper right). General wear to panels with some scratching and abrasions. Most of the panels have some small tears or breaks to canvas or light surface abrasions.
