APPIANUS, of Alexandria (ca. 100-ca. 170). Romanarum historiarum [ libri ], in Greek. Edited by Robert and Charles Estienne. Paris: Charles Estienne, 1551. 2 o (310 x 207 mm). Claude Garamond's Greek type ( grecs du roi ) in 3 sizes. Printer's woodcut basilisk device (Schreiber B2) on title, ornamental woodcut headpieces and initials. (First two leaves detached [with endpaper], soiled and frayed, marginal discoloration throughout, occasional light spotting.) 18th-century calf (rebacked, broken). Provenance : a few early marginalia in second work; Lionel H. Pries (bookplate). EDITIO PRINCEPS, the first classical work printed in all three sizes of Garamond's grecs du roi type. The edition was one of a series of Greek texts edited and printed by the Estiennes from manuscripts at the Bibliothèque du Roi. The printing was begun by Robert Estienne before his departure for Geneva, and continued by his brother Charles. The Estienne Appianus is generally considered the most successful of the books printed in the Royal Greek types. The headpieces and initials, formerly attributed to Geoffrey Tory, were first used in the 1544 Eusebius. Adams A-1340; Harvard/Mortimer French 29; Schreiber Estiennes 126. [ Bound with :] APPIANUS. Basel: Hieronymus Froben and Nicolaus Bischoff (Episcopius), 1554. 2 o. Froben's woodcut basilisk device on title, larger device on verso of last leaf. Woodcut white-on-black historiated initials. (Small marginal stain to title, marginal discoloration, some creasing to lower forecorners, last leaf a bit soiled and creased.) Adams A-1347; BM/STC German , p. 38. These two important humanist editions of Appian's history are often found bound together.
