Type: 23:110R. 7-line initial spaces with printed guide letters. (Small repaired marginal tears to first leaf and to h1r, blank corner of K4 torn away, small perforation to q7-8 catching 5 letters, first few leaves a bit soiled, some light dampstaining to upper corners). 18th-century mottled sheep (extremities rubbed, rebacked). Provenance : contemporary marginal note on first page -- Albert Ehrman, Broxbourne Library (bookplates, monogrammed inkstamp with shelf number, sale, Sotheby's, London, Part 2, 8 May 1978, lot 515). Second separate edition of De bellis civilibus , the most important portion of the surviving books of Appian of Alexandria's history of the Roman conquests. This edition, reprinted from the complete edition of Maler and Ratdolt, Venice 1477, is the first of five surviving 15th-century books from the press of Franciscus de Mazalibus, a member of a prominent local family of Spanish origin, whose relative Albertus de Mazalibus had printed a handful of books earlier in the decade. The attractive type fount appears only here and in the complementary edition of Appianus' Part I printed at the neighboring town of Scandiano less than three months later by Peregrino de Pasquale (see lot 154). Pasquale's relationship with de Mazalibus is no clearer than the cause of de Mazalibus' abrupt retirement from the project and apparent cessation of activity for the next four years.
