SIGNED and INSCRIBED: “ Landing Point, Buzz Aldrin, Apollo XI .” Aldrin pauses during flight activities to photograph the landing site as they pass over it in lunar orbit, later marking his and Armstrong's landing point with an "X." The site is at the very beginning of a “lunar day,” with the lunar surface at the top of the photograph still in darkness. Lunar sunrise was crucial to Armstrong's piloting as he had to avoid a large boulder-strewed crater with less than a minute of fuel remaining during his landing.
