Fred Haise's Apollo 11 backup Lunar Module Pilot cap Fred Haise was assigned to be Buzz Aldrin's backup for the Apollo 11 mission. NASA ordered these hats made for both the prime and backup crews. To quote Haise's provenance letter, " These ball caps were given to the crew after splashdown, after they entered the quarantine facility onboard the recovery ship. If there were any last minute substitutions of one or all prime crew members, it was unlikely that ball caps could have been made in time. I got my cap sometime after the prime Apollo 11 crew left on their mission. I later flew on Apollo 13 where this provision was utilized when Jack Swigert replaced Ken Mattingly as Command Module Pilot just two and a half days before our launch on April 11, 1970. " Size 7 1/4, manufactured by the Pittsburgh Hat and Cap Co.
