[Apollo 11] Ethereal Sunrise over Earth before translunar injection. Michael Collins 16–24 July 1969. Printed 1969. An extraordinarily rare photograph taken during the first moments of Apollo 11 as the crew was orbiting Earth before firing the Saturn V third stage for translunar injection. The spacecraft was passing over Earth’s nightside, and Collins was eager to shoot a photo of Earth at sunrise, but had a hard time finding the Hasselblad camera floating in the cabin’s zero g. He eventually captured this “fantastic” view (see mission transcript) looking east towards Earth terminator, showing reflections of the morning sun over the cloud-speckled Earth above the Pacific Ocean. [...] 001:19:57 Collins: Jesus Christ, look at that horizon! 001:19:59 Armstrong: Isn’t that something? 001:20:00 Collins: God damn, that’s pretty! This is unreal.
