Woodcut world map, truncated cordiform projection, image 188 x 273 mm (237 x 331 mm sheet). Within woodcut border of clouds, windheads, two larger figures at upper margin, one with the Holy Roman Emperor's double eagle on his breastplate, verso blank. (Light browning and minor mostly marginal staining.) Apianus' map, based on a now lost larger map of Frisius, first appeared in 1544 in his Cosmographia. This copy has the text in Latin and French, and is printed of Shirley's Block 1 with the word "Europe" at an angle. This is one of the earliest obtainable maps, not based on the Ptolemy. It shows North and South America complete, South America resembles the continent, the northern part is shown as a narrow strip of land labeled "Baccalearum" (Land of Cod) - a reference to the cod-fishing industry of the north-east coast.
