ANTOLINI, Giovanni (1756-1841).
Milan: Fratelli Bettalli, [1814]. 2 o (526 x 436 mm). Engraved vignette on title, 24 full-sheet plates comprising 14 sepia aquatints plates and 10 engraved plates. Contemporary boards (worn). Provenance : acquired from Marlborough Rare Books, 1973. FIRST EDITION of this collection of designs for the Foro Bonaparte , a most grandiose scheme of urban planning proposed when Beauharnais, Napoleon's stepson, was the viceroy of Lombardy. It included modernization of the Castello Sforza, Piazza del Castello, Piazza d'Armi, and the arena to be surrounded by fourteen public buildings (including a spa, stock exchange, the Pantheon, a theater and a museum). Only parts of the plan were actually built, and most of those remain today. This work was published by subscription, and the neoclassical style is reminiscent of Boullée and Ledoux. Antolini is best remembered for his work in the Piazza San Marco, Venice. Berlin Kat. 2649.
