Antoine Coypel French, 1661-1722 The Judgment of Solomon Oil on canvas 45 x 57 inches (114.3 x 144.8 cm) Unf... French, 1661-1722 The Judgment of Solomon Oil on canvas 45 x 57 inches (114.3 x 144.8 cm) Unframed Provenance: Private collection, Philadelphia By inheritance to the present owner This work is a version of the Judgment of Solomon that Coypel exhibited at the Salon in 1699 and which later provided the composition for a tapestry by the Gobelins factory (1717-1720). Coypel's estate inventory shows that he kept smaller replicas of his important paintings in his studio so that copies could be made of them. One interesting feature of this version is the face of the young man looking out at the viewer on the right, which appears to be a portrait of the artist's son, Charles-Antione Coypel (1694-1752). We are grateful to Mme. Nicole Garnier, conservateur generale du Patrimoine chargee du musee Conde, for confirming the attribution of this work and for her kind assistance in cataloguing it. We also wish to thank Gui Rochat for identifying the composition. C
Wax relined. Areas of abrasion; some repaint. Repaired horizontal ear extending through the body of the baby at lower center.
