Measures approx; 90cm long. During the South African War of 1899 to 1902 the British took as many as 20 000 prisoners, resulting in overcrowded prisoner of war camps in South Africa. Those camps which were situated in the Cape Colony also became particularly vulnerable to attack by enemy forces. These difficulties influenced the decision to ship prisoners to Bermuda, India, Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka) and the island of St Helena.
