One major historiated initial, done in color and gilt, showing the ascension of Jesus Christ surrounded by his apostles. One minor pen-flourished initial in red, with black decorations. Borders decorated with sprouting plant forms, springing from the historiated initial (foliate bar borders). 36,5x54.4 cm. (14½x21½"). Matted. A beautiful example of a delicate historiated initial and decorative borders. The latter being popular in Gothic and Renaissance illumination and evolved during the thirteenth century, into a style where the plant forms sprang from decorated letters. Lot Amendments Condition: Some creasing and darkening, very little flaking of some coloration and gilt, illuminations still clear; near fine. Not examined out of frame. Item number: 253058
