London: John Norwood, 1751. 8 o (196 x 124 mm.). Contemporary calf, sides decorated with gilt double fillet (light wear to joints and foot of spine). Provenance : Earl of Ellenborough (old ink stamp on front pastedown). FIRST EDITION of this rare work, describing "one of the most remarkable voyages ever undertaken. When the Wager , under Captain Cheap, was wrecked off the coast of Chile, John Bulkeley, with eighty others, set out in the long boats to reach the coast of Brazil, some 3,000 miles away. Many died of hunger and exposure, some had to be abandoned on the coats of Patagonia, but thirty finally reached Rio Grande du Sol. Of these three survivors, Bulkeley and Cummins (see lots 76 and 77 for their account), the gunner and carpenter of the Wager , and the author of this account, were able to take a Portuguese ship to Lisbon" (Hill).
