Anselm Reyle Monumento al Partigiano (Monument to the Partisan) 2004 Mirror, cement and wooden plinth. 88 5/8 x 47 1/4 x 47 1/4 in. (225 x 120 x 120 cm). Signed and dated “Anselm Reyle 2004” on the reverse of the mirror element.
Provenance Galerie Giti Nourbakhsch, Berlin; Private collection, Germany; Private collection, England Exhibited Kunsthalle Zurich, Anselm Reyle Ars Nova, January 21 – March 26, 2006 Literature D. Eichler, B. Hainley, B. Ruf, Anselm Reyle Ars Nova, Zurich, 2006, pp. 186-187 (illustrated) Catalogue Essay Colorful stripes of paint or shiny assembled foils – Anselm Reyle’s artistic oeuvre is one of contemporary chic and manufactured perfection. With their shiny colours, his works often have elements of kitsch. However Reyle retains the artistic integrity of an artist producing within his time, whilst simultaneously drawing inspiration from 20th century art. Reyle plays on various past concepts, such as the monochrome, as well those ready-made concepts which he "minimally" translates and adopts into his own time with a contemporary take on the past. Monumento al Partigiano, a sculptural work by the artist, is based on what he refers to as "objet trouvé". Using left-over or randomly found objects, Reyle turns them into sculptural works of art. Consequently, these works have become abstracted from their original intent and have been re-configured into works of art that seem to project a sense of having been used before. With its three dimensionality and contemporary form, Monumento al Partigiano, is the epitome of what Reyle terms a "Modernist cliché", in which modernist ideas and contemporary materials result in an artistic discourse between past and present.
