Beschreibung:

ANIANUS (fl. c. 1300?). Compotus cum commento . With directions for use in French. [Lyons: Johann Siber, c. 1490]. Chancery 4° (185 x 127mm). Collation: a-e 8 (a1 [lacking], a2r liber qui compotus inscribitur incipit feliciter, a3v l.21 incipit cpotus manualis a magistro Aniano, a4v l.18 text, e5v oy qui point de latin ne cgnois, e8r finit liber, e8v blank). 39 leaves (of 40, lacking first leaf, probably blank). 30 lines, verse 23 lines. 12 woodcut illustrations. 3- to 6-line initial spaces, some with guide-letters. (Outer margins with filled-in wormholes and restored corners, these repairs occasionally touching one or two letters of text, upper margin of b4 cropped with slight loss to first line of text on recto and to border of woodcut on verso.) Modern limp vellum. Provenance : Baldesar Vaccarius, son of Dominicus magister Sospitellus (contemporary ownership inscription on a8r) -- Antonio Pellegrino from the late Francisco Sospitello (inscription on A8v; further inscriptions and pen trials in various hands on A8v; two notes in Italian on A7v and A8r, one listing the formula needed for making a mirror; some astrological charts with star-signs penned in, faces of the sun and moon added to the cuts on b7r). A RARE, UNRECORDED ISSUE. With the exception of the 1488 Strassburg edition by Prüss, all incunable editions of this popular medieval astrological manual and calendar are extremely scarce, no doubt owing to its constant use. This edition appears to be a variant of GW 1984, having one additional woodcut. Typesetting differences include 'Finit liber' rather than 'La fin' on e8r, and also a more sparing use of abbreviation. For example, this issue has 'Incipit cpotus manualis a magistro. Aniano metrice cpilatus ad rgnorantiã temporis expellendam' on a3v rather than 'Incipit cpotus manual' a magistro aniano metrice \\npilatus ad ignorantiã t'pis expellandam.' The illustrations comprise 4 woodcuts of hands holding astrological charts, 6 other charts, and 2 cuts representing the sun and moon; the directions for use are given in French verse. ISTC records 16 Lyons editions printed between 1488/89 and about 1500, but not this rare early edition by Siber. cf. GW 1984.
