ANGSTRM, Anders Jonas (1814-1874). Recherches sur le Spectre Solaire . Uppsala: W. Schultz, 1868. One volume plus atlas. Text: 2 o (308 x 240 mm). Lithographed frontispiece. Original brown printed wrappers. Atlas: (512 x 329 mm). 2 o (305 x 240 mm). 6 lithographed plates by Robert Thaln (1827-1905), Angstrm's laboratory assistant, with separate title. Unbound, laid into original brown printed wrapper (small skilful repairs to spine and extremities, margins slightly faded); brown cloth folding case. UNBOUND SHEETS OF THE FIRST EDITION. The classic work on the solar system in which Angstrm demonstrated the presence of hydrogen and a number of other elements in the sun. Solar spectroscopy provided the first scientific evidence (other then the special cases of meteorites) that the elements known on earth are also present elsewhere in the universe. Angstrm also established a scale of wave-lengths for measuring spectral lines, replacing Kirchoff's arbitrary scale. Angstrm's system was based on a unit of one ten millionth of a millimetre, named the angstrom in his honor. Norman 56. (2)
