ANGLO-SAXON COINS - ENGLISH IMITATIVE - PROFILE BUST GOLD TREMISSIS Circa 600-675 AD An English imitation of a Merovingian tremissis. Obv: crude bust with vestigial legend. Rev: cross with blundered legend. 0.74 grams. About as struck. Extremely rare; type previously not recorded. Provenance Found Huddersfield area, UK, before 1998; with a printout of the EMC entry and a note from Sean Miller (Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge). Published See Early Medieval Corpus, Cambridge, reference EMC 1998.0087 (this coin). Literature S. -; N. -; Prou -; MEC 1, -. Footnotes This coin is almost certainly an English made imitation of a continental tremissis type, with heavy gold plating over an uncertain core; local copies of sceattas are well known in England but are very unusual in the gold series. An interesting piece, worthy of further research.
