Andy Warhol Stress! (Negative) circa 1985-86 synthetic polymer and silkscreen ink on canvas 16 x 20 in. (40.6 x 50.8 cm.) Stamped with the Estate of Andy Warhol and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. and numbered "PA10.182" along the overlap.
Provenance The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc., New York Private Collection Catalogue Essay “ I never fall apart, because I never fall together.” - ANDY WARHOL Andy Warhol is with little doubt, the most infuential and recognizable artist of the 20th century. The shadow which he cast upon the contemporary art world in New York, and by association, the rest of the world is nearly impossible to escape for any artist working today. The 1980’s saw a renewed burst of creative energy from the maestro as he collaborated with and responded to his younger contemporaries taking advantage of the “bull” market for art at the time. Warhol superbly demonstrates his ability to create work that perfectly encapsulates typical American consumer driven malaise, here doing so with this straightforward text painting, Stress!, from 1985. Continuing a tradition of text based paintings which he began early on in his career, Stress!, 1985, utilizes a very particular iconicity with its truncated text and aggressive positive/negative dynamic, not to mention the aggressiveness of the exclamation. Pulling references from newspapers and other mass produced periodicals, Warhol translated what was clearly a type of advertisement into an easily recognizable work all his own. The coming market crash of ’87 and the rapid deterioration of the buoyant mood in America and abroad would prove to be a literal manifestation of Warhol’s painting and it wouldn’t be until the mid-90’s when America would finally find its cure. Read More Artist Bio Andy Warhol American • 1928 - 1987 A seminal figure in the Pop Art movement of the early 1960s, Andy Warhol's paintings and screenprints are iconic beyond the scope of Art History, having become universal signifiers of an age. An early career in commercial illustration led to Warhol's appropriation of imagery from American popular culture and insistent concern with the superficial wonder of permanent commodification that yielded a synthesis of word and image, of art and the everyday. Warhol's obsession with creating slick, seemingly mass-produced artworks led him towards the commercial technique of screenprinting, which allowed him to produce large editions of his painted subjects. The clean, mechanical surface and perfect registration of the screenprinting process afforded Warhol a revolutionary absence of authorship that was crucial to the Pop Art manifesto. View More Works
