An unusual Italian contemporary glass ‘Absolut Regulateur Squelette’ weight-driven wall regulator timepiece, Vittorio Scialla, Turin, number 18 dated 2005 The eleven-day movement with frosted glass five-wheel train utilising ball bearing pivots and roller pinions regulated by deadbeat escapement with roller pallets and seconds pendulum, the upper three wheels with three crossings, the lower two with six set between tapered tempered glass plates united by five cylindrical chrome plated pillars, the front with gilt minute hand driven direct by the third wheel reading against twelve concentric dots drilled into the glass frontplate over conforming hour hand connected direct to the greatwheel arbor, the frontplate inscribed 002-0-018, 15-10-2005, Vittorio Scialla to upper edge (towards apex), 110cm, (43.25ins) high. The current lot is one of three closely related designs devised by Vittorio Scialla during the mid 1990’s. His intention was to create the first timepiece to be made with wheels of glass; the first prototype was completed in July 1995 which was subsequently followed with the launch of his first model the ‘Absolut Crystal’. This was then followed in May 1996 by the ‘Absolut Murano’ (which incorporated coloured Murano glass within the design) then finally the ‘Absolut Regulateur Squelette’ in September 1996.
