An unpublished interview Bob Dylan [1965] DYLAN, Bob (b.1941). Typed and manuscript document signed several times within (“Bob Dylan” and “B.D.”), n.p., [1965]. Four pages, not uniform in size but average 215 x 226mm, stapled (light minor soiling). An unpublished interview with Bob Dylan's typed and handwritten answers. Dylan's self-titled debut album of largely folk songs first appeared in 1962, but by 1965 he was using an electric guitar—most famously at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. The present interview includes ten questions about folk music, rock & roll, and fame, of which Dylan has answered nine (question #8 has been excised). The answers are cryptic: question #1 asks "How did you happen to discover folk music before you discovered Rock and Roll?" His typed reply: "I was happening to be sitting on a rock one day eating a roll then I happened to see this folk walk by — needless to say, I could see the folk much more clearly then [sic] anything I was sitting on or eating… it was then that this all started." Question #4 asks "Have you found having money a gas or a headache?" Dylan's handwritten reply: "Yes I have bought many gallons of gas sinse [sic] I've struck it rich — Also my headaches have disappeared — only when I drink the gas do I get headaches —" Question #3 asks "Did you ever feel part of a tradition in which Woody Guthrie was a key figure? Do you still?" His reply is simply: "Yes & no." The interviewer knew Dylan through her work with Boston Broadside, Boston’s folk music newspaper. She asked him for the interview but after receiving his answers was unsure of the appropriate venue; it has remained unpublished ever since.
