An Italian Istoriato faience tazza decorated in colours depicting Deucalion and Pyrrha. Urbino 16th century. H. 5 cm. Diam. 26.5 cm. In Greek mythology, the only survivors of the flood that Zeus sent to punish the overconfident people. Following Prometheus' advice, they built an ark that saved them from drowning. They landed on Mount Parnassos and created a new human genus by throwing “their mother's bones”, ie. the stones on the ground, back over the shoulder. Of the stones that Deucalion cast, men arose, while Pyrrha's stones became women. Deucalion's eldest son was Hellen, the Hellenic ancestor. Provenance: Professor MD Erik Jacobsen 1903–1985, hence family.
