An Indian silver presentation model of the King Edward Memorial Mitford Hospital in Dacca early 20th century the building showing two floors, with seven turrets, with the inscription Presented to Lt Col.E.A.R Newman, C.I.E M.D I.M.S, by the staff of the Mitford Hospital and Dacca Medical School, March 1922, 45.6cm long, 10.6cm high Fußnoten E. A. R. Newman. M.B. I.M.S. Ernest Alan Robert Newman was Born Stamford Baron, 12th May 1867; baptised there 6th June., the son of Lieutenant-Colonel J. Young, and was educated at Haileybury College; Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge; and St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London. He took his B.A. in the Natural Sciences Tripos at Cambridge in 1887, the M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. in 1890, M.B., B.Chir. in 1891. He gained a high place in the entrance examination for the I.M.S. in 1893 and joined the Indian Medical Service as a Surgeon Lieutenant on 29 July 1893, and was promoted Surgeon Captain on 29 July 1896. Attached to the 45th (Rattray's) Sikhs, he served on the North West Frontier, Malakand, 1897-98, including defence of Malakand, relief of Chakdara, action at Landakai, operations in Bajaur and in Mamund country (Medal and two clasps). He also served in the Tirah Campaign of 1897-98, including the operations in Bara Valley (Clasp). While on leave in 1899 he proceeded to his M.D. Promoted Major on 30 January 1905, and Lieutenant-Colonel on 30 January 1913, Newman served during the Great War as Superintendent Medical School and Civil Surgeon, Dacca, Bengal. Here an early training in architecture enabled him to draw up valuable and economical plans for the reconstruction of the hospital and medical school buildings, work which gained him the C.I.E. Was made a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire on 3 June 1918. (C.I.E.) He was a sound, all-round practitioner, especially interested in ophthalmic surgery, and was the author of papers on the treatment of cataract as well as of a Manual on Aseptic Surgery for use in medical schools in India. He was the author of Manual of Aseptic Surgery, 1906, and Irrigation Cataract Extraction, 1933. He retired on 29 July 1923. After his retirement under the age limit before he reached the administrative grade (the common fate of I.M.S. officers who take higher qualifications before entering the Service), he was appointed ophthalmic surgeon to the Stamford Infirmary and consulting ophthalmic surgeon, Rutland County Council. He married Lilian Duggan, daughter of Lieut.-Col. J. Young. Died March 2 1943. From Cambridge University Register at CAIUS college, Oct. 1, 1884. Schools – Thorpe-Mandeville and Haileybury. Matric.
