An impressive late 19th century French, patinated and gilt bronze figural clock garniture circa 1870, in the Neo Grec style, the movement stamped BORDIER ET CIE A PARIS No.448, the clock case of swept break front form cast with palmettes and with scrolling griffin side mounts, on corresponding swept palmette base feet, the whole surmounted by a seated figure of a scholar in 17th century dress probably depicting Rene Descartes (French, 1596-1650), the brass twin train movement with Brocot type suspension striking on a bell with key, the six light garniture formed as scrolling lilies issuing from behind figures of classical muses allegorical of music and poetry, the clock 72cm high, the candelabrum 79.5cm (3)
