AN IMPORTANT YORUBA BOWL FOR SHANGO Arugba Shango , by Areogun of Osi, Ilorin (c.1880-1954) Carved as a kneeling female figure, her arms raised to support the circular bowl, carved triangular panels suspended from the rim and a mask carved in relief at the front, a seated maternity figure suckling a child to her left, a standing male figure with inverted Shango staff to her right, two diminutive figures to the front of the base; a kneeling female holding a bowl and a male holding a Shango staff and cock, the cover with a prostrate figure carved in high relief holding a cock in each hand, a Shango staff suspended from each shoulder, the rim of the cover with a mask carved in relief flanked by panels in relief, one with a figure sacrificing a ram, the other with two figures and a tethered ram, the remainder of the border with seven Shango staffs in relief, the whole painted reddish brown with dark blue and white embellishments 104cm. high
