"An Important Collection of Lalique Mascots from an American Private Collection Yes, the greatest living artist in glass designed a series for the motorists of Paris- and it was the Judgment of Paris that nothing so original had ever adorn ed a car. Beautiful by day, they are altogether captivating at night, when illuminated with concealed lights in rich and glowing colours. The models range from a team of charging horses to a dragon fly poised for flight, and there are appropri ate designs for every type of car. Exquisite works of art these, and practical too, for the glass is untarnishable and almost unbreakable. Although initially working with jewelry, Laliques design work was prolific and, over a long career, incorpo rated an array of disciplines including illustration, sculpture, furniture design and molded glasswork, the latter being for which his is most widely known and admired today. A modern designer with an appreciation of classical beauty, Rene Lalique was fascinated with light and with the translu cence and opacity of glass. Like a true modernist, Laliqu attempted to convey movement and the dynamism of 'modern life in his work, however employing 'classical' forms in th process. In 1925, with the rising popularity of motor cars Reene Lalique designed his first mascot (bouchons d radiateuur) for Citroen, the French automobile company. Ove the ccourse of the next six years Lalique would desig approximateely twenty-nine models for companies such a Bentley, Bugattti, Delage, Hispano-Suiza, Rolls Royce an Voisin.
