AN IMPORTANT ART DECO DIAMOND BRACELET, BY LACLOCHE The articulated openwork band comprising five curved lines of baguette-cut diamonds to the diamond-set buckle clasp, circa 1925, 18.0 cm Unsigned, but by LaCloche Fréres, no. 74295, originally sold with a photograph and letter from LaCloche stating that the bracelet contains 283 baguette-cut diamonds weighing approximately 80 carats, 4 square-cut and 90 round diamonds weighing approximately 1.60 carats, 2 trapeze-cut diamonds weighing approximately 1.96 carats and 1 baguette-cut diamond weighing approximately 2.00 carats. Provenance: Mrs. Sarah E. Shea Sotheby's, New York, December 10th 1986, Lot 287 In the early twenties, the discovery of abstraction and minimalism in painting and sculpture was accompanied by a similar movement of simplification of the decorative arts which we now call the Art Deco style. In jewellery, one of the most characteristic developments was the appearance of square, baguette and other angular diamonds, arranged in geometric patterns to form a bold graphic yet luxurious look. This bracelet is an example of this style at its best; the undulation of the rows of baguettes in the wide strap, softens the hard angles of the stones, while the wave pattern is reinforced by the curving spaces between the diamonds. The focal point of the composition is the unusual 2 cm long baguette mounted within a stylised buckle, and flanked by a pair of trapezoid stones.
