An extremely rare matched set of six George II whip-end teaspoons, with twist stems and chased matted husks on the backs of the bowls; two with lion passant and maker's mark W.T (script), three with maker's mark only, C.D. and one with lion passant only, circa 1740 - 12.5cm long, 2.75oz. Literature: I.Pickford, Silver Flatware p.177, for an illustration of these particular spoons where Pickford notes "these are the only known examples of teaspoons in the pure form of this pattern". Photograph Courtesy of the Victora and Albert Museum. Pickford also outlines "The whip pattern is one of the most rare of those known from the 18th century. Its name derives from the shape of the stem with is formed like a ship with its end bent over and coiled back round the stem. Until recently it was only known from the mid 18th century salt spoons. The discovery of the illustrated teaspoons together with the examples by Paul de Lamerie which combine whip with rococo naturalism, shows that the range of this pattern must have been greater although no other examples have come to light.
