AN EXTREMELY RARE FLEMISH (?) HALBERD OF THE GUARD OF THE ARCHDUKE ALBRECHT AS GOVERNOR OF THE SPANISH NETHERLANDS, AND A FLEMISH (?) PARTISAN The first dated 1596, the second early 17th Century The first with flat crescentic axe-blade made in one with a beak-shaped fluke, each cusped at the base and etched overall with trophies of Classical arms, musical instruments, and strapwork and foliage against a dotted ground, framing on one face the coat-of-arms of an Austrian archduke, under an archducal bonnet, and the date '1[5]96', and on the other, the cross raguly and fire-steels of Burgundy and the monogram 'ALB', spearhead-shaped spike of flattened hollow diamond section, struck at the base with a maker's(?) mark, a 'G', and tapering socket of rectangular section etched with trophies, on wooden staff, probably original, with later conical iron shoe (etching rubbed throughout); the second with elongated triangular blade with medial ridge on each face, and upcurved pointed lugs at the base, the lower part decorated with punched foliage (rubbed) extending over the tapering circular-section socket, on later wooden staff (wormed) with pointed iron shoe 29in. (73.6cm) and 33¾in. (85.8cm.) heads (2)
